Period Guangxu period (1875-1908) Description Horizontal hand scroll, ink on woven brocade, with parallel text in Chinese and Manchurian, dated to the 'twelfth anniversary of the Guangxu reign' corresponding to 1886. It grants the Lady of Rank (gaoming furen) to the mother of Zuo Gongying, governor of Jianjiang county, Hubei. Dimensions 184 x 31,5 cm Literature The imperial edict was a gaoming—an honorary certificate or appointment bestowed by the emperor upon officials and their families.
