Period 17th/18th century Description The cover cast with Arabic calligraphy in two concentric bands, set against a ring-punched ground, reading al-ḥamd li-llāh (الحمد لله), within a circular band of calligraphy—probably from the Qur’an—inscribed with qal al-nabī ʿalayhi al-salām: al-ṣidq yunjī wa-l-kaḏhib yuhlik (قال النبي عليه السلام الصدق ينجي والكذب يهلك), meaning: “The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: ‘Truth leads to salvation, and lying leads to destruction,’”. Dimensions D 14.4 cm, H 7.4 cm. Weight: 2140 gr. Literature Ref: Compare to an Arabic-inscribed box, listed as Ming dynasty, sold at Koller Auktionen Zürich, Lundi, 03 décembre 2018, lot 180. A related box, but with the calligraphy to the outer band of the top of the lid replaced by floral scrolls, was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, Later Chinese Bronzes from the Collection of Ulrich Hausmann, 07 October 2014, lot 3323.
