A PAIR OF FINELY CARVED WOOD FIGURES OF PUTTI, FRANCE, 17TH-18TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 546, EA 1998, Pair of French Baroque 17th c. Angel ca. 28 cm H.” Gallery price: EUR 5,300 or approx. EUR 8,900 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Each depicted in a graceful yet dynamic stance with one leg extended and the arm on the opposite side raised, as if captured in a light, elegant leap. Their bare torsos are softly rounded, conveying a sense of youthful fullness, and extend into small heads with angelic faces. One figure gazes upward, while the other looks slightly downward. Both display expressive eyes, chubby cheeks, and small mouths. Their heads are crowned with abundant, flowing curls. Both backs are pierced and fitted with a metal loop, intended for wall suspension. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, such figures were commonly carved in wood and often served as preparatory models for larger finished works in bronze. Many of these dynamic, playful figures were ultimately intended for incorporation into civic fountains.
