(2) Re-Horakhty is a major syncretic solar deity in ancient Egyptian religion, combining aspects of Re, the supreme sun god, and Horus of the Horizon, the falcon-headed god associated with kingship and celestial order. His name, meaning “Re-Horus of the Horizons,” reflects his dual nature as both the rising sun and the divine ruler who traverses the sky, embodying the daily solar cycle of birth, zenith, and renewal. Typically depicted in falcon form or as a falcon-headed man crowned with a sun disk, Re-Horakhty represents the visible manifestation of the sun at dawn and its life-giving energy that sustains cosmic and earthly order. He was closely associated with concepts of kingship, as the pharaoh was considered the earthly embodiment of Horus and the son of Re, reinforcing divine legitimacy and universal balance. In temple iconography and amuletic form, Re-Horakhty symbolized regeneration, protection, and the cyclical nature of time, particularly in funerary contexts where his rising aspect promised rebirth for the deceased. His enduring prominence from the New Kingdom through the Late Period reflects the central importance of solar theology in Egyptian religion, where creation, authority, and eternal renewal were fundamentally linked to the movement of the sun across the sky. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related turquoise faience amulet of a falcon-headed deity, dated 6th-4th century BC, 4.5 cm high, formerly in the British Museum and now in the City Art Gallery and Museum Bristol, accession number H1030. Compare a related larger green faience amulet of Re-Horakhty, dated Late Period-Ptolemaic Period, 7.8 cm high, in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 1894.1946.
