A TURQUOISE FAIENCE ‘BABOON’ AMULET, LATE PERIOD-PTOLEMAIC PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, 664-30 BC. Finely modeled, the animal depicted seated on its haunches atop an oval base, with its forearms resting on its knees, the torso rising into a well-defined simian face characterized by a pair of bulging eyes and a prominent muzzle. The reverse fitted with a suspension loop. Initially venerated as the anthropomorphic embodiment of a lunar deity referred to as ‘the Great White One’, it was subsequently syncretized with Thoth, the god of writing, typically represented as an ibis or ibis-headed figure. In its baboon manifestation, Thoth retained his lunar associations. This diminutive amulet was likely an object of dedication within a cultic or votive context.
