A TURQUOISE FAIENCE DJED-PILLAR AMULET, LATE PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, 664-332 BC. Well modeled with a gently waisted vertical shaft surmounted by four horizontal ribs, linked by subtle striations. The reverse provided with a secondary support, perforated at its upper end with a small circular aperture for suspension. Such efficacy was thought to derive from their form, material, color, and the ritual recitations associated with them. This example represents the djed pillar, a symbol of stability, endurance, and permanence. From the New Kingdom onward, the djed became closely associated with Osiris, who embodied rebirth after death. Multiple djed amulets were frequently placed on the chest of a mummy to ensure protection and renewal in the afterlife. Blue and green hues were especially favored for amulets, as they evoked water and vegetation, sources of life in the desert environment of Egypt, and thus symbolized vitality, regeneration, and rebirth.
