A RARE TURQUOISE FAIENCE ‘SPIRAL SHELL’ AMULET, LATE PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, 664-332 BC. Well modeled as a tapering gastropod shell and entirely covered in a subtle turquoise-green glaze. Shells of various forms, including cowries, cones and other marine species, were widely collected and incorporated into jewellery, necklaces and amuletic adornment throughout Egyptian history, valued for their association with fertility, regeneration and the life-giving waters. While shell-shaped beads and pendants are well attested, the present example is distinguished by its unusual rendering of a tapering spiral shell with pronounced whorls, a rare and imaginative translation of a natural marine form into glazed faience.
