A TURQUOISE-GREEN FAIENCE DOUBLE BA BIRD AMULET, LATE PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, 664-332 BC. Well modeled, the pair of sacred birds associated with Ptah of Memphis is depicted standing side by side upon an integral rectangular base, their wings are folded against the bodies, while bearing highly schematic human heads, each surmounted by a circular solar disk, backed with a cylindrical lug, pierced for suspension. After death, the ba was able to travel out from the tomb, but it had to periodically return to the tomb and be reunited with the mummy. The ba was usually represented as a bird with a human head, and sometimes with human arms. Faience ba-bird amulets commonly accompanied the body of the deceased, often suspended from the neck, particularly during the Late and Ptolemaic Periods. Their function was to ensure the mobility and continued existence of the ba in the afterlife.
