A TURQUOISE FAIENCE AMULET OF TAWERET, LATE PERIOD, DYNASTY XXVI-XXX This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, 664-343 BC. Combining elements of a hippopotamus, woman, and crocodile, depicted striding forward with her left leg advanced, both hands held alongside her swollen lower abdomen, below the pendulant breasts. The face with her wide-open mouth baring teeth and tongue, wearing a tripartite striated wig and broad collar. The three animals were some of the fiercest species found in ancient Egypt and combining their strengths produced a most potent deity and therefore amulet. Taweret's particular responsibility was the protection of women during pregnancy and childbirth. She is often portrayed leaning on a sa symbol. Her representation was sometimes used on tomb walls or funerary equipment to protect the deceased during rebirth.
