A FAIENCE AMULET OF TAWERET, LATE PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 58, F. A. E. amulet of Tauret Late P.” Gallery price: EUR 700 or approx. EUR 1,200 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Egypt 664-332 BC. The hippopotamus-headed goddess wearing a straited tripartite wig, the head with gaping mouth baring teeth, depicted with pendulous breasts and pregnant stomach, the back pillar in the form of a neatly incised crocodile tail which is pierced horizontally at the top with a hole for suspension. The goddess frightened away evil spirits with her apotropaic qualities, as she physically combined fearful aspects of beasts, including the head and body of a hippopotamus, the tail of a crocodile and the paws of a lion, with fertile features such as a swollen pregnant belly and pendulous breasts.
