A RARE EGYPTIAN TURQUOISE FAIENCE ‘THOTH’ AMULET, THIRD INTERMEDIATE-LATE PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, circa 1069-332 BC. The ibis-headed god depicted sitting on his throne, the sides of which are in openwork, holding a wadjet eye in front of his chest, depicting wearing a tripartite wig that is surmounted by an ornate atef crown. For Egyptians, the sculptures, vessels, jewelry, and ritual objects made of faience glimmered with the brilliance of eternity. While faience is made of common materials—quartz, alkaline salts, lime, and mineral-based colorants—it maintained important status among precious stones and metals. Faience may have been developed to simulate highly prized and rare semi-precious blue stones like turquoise. This man-made substance allowed the Egyptians to make a wide variety of objects covered in shiny, bright blue glaze—a color that was closely linked with fertility, life, and the gleaming qualities of the sun. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related faience amulet fragment of Thoth, discovered in the ancient city of Memphis, dated to Late Period, Dynasty XXVI, in the Garstang Museum of Archaeology, object number E.9003. Compare a related Bastet amulet, dated Third Intermediate Period, 6.5 cm high, in the National Museums Liverpool, accession number 56.22.600. Compare a related faience amulet of an enthroned lion-headed goddess, dated Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, circa 664-30 BC, previously sold at Sotheby's New York, 17 December 1996, lot 27, and now listed at Alexander Ancient Art, stock number E1370, price EUR 5,500.
