A GROUP OF FOUR TURQUOISE-BLUE FAIENCE ‘BES’ AMULETS AND FOUR YELLOW FAIENCE BEADS, NEW KINGDOM This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, circa 1550-1070 BC. A mixed group of eight blue and yellow faience amulets: four in turquoise faience in the form of Bes with a tambourine; three in yellow faience in the form of a cornflower; and one yellow faience in the form of a date. All but two have a loop for suspension. Both were staples of the Egyptian garden and were used to fashion fresh bouquets for shrines and floral broad collars. Because the buds of these flowers have a similar shape, it is sometimes difficult to be sure which one is represented. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related turquoise blue faience amulet of Bes with tambourine, New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, 1.5 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 11.215.186.
