A BLUE FAIENCE SCARAB FOR AMUN-RA, NEW KINGDOM This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, circa 1550-1070 BC. Naturalistically carved, the scarab depicts the dung beetle, the convex dorsal surface is subtly ridged to indicate the elytra, while the legs and head are defined in low relief along the sides. Overall with a bright turquoise glaze. The amulet is drilled horizontally for suspension. The base with a neatly carved hieroglyphic inscription showing the name of Amun-Ra framed by paired neb-signs, reading ‘Amun-Ra is Lord.’ Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Dimensions: Length 1.7 cm The present scarab bears the name of Amun-Ra, the supreme state god of New Kingdom Egypt. The ancient Egyptians believed that the dung beetle, the Scarabaeus sacer, was one of the manifestations of the sun god Ra. Representations of these beetles were used as amulets, and for ritual or administrative purposes. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related blue faience scarab bearing the name of Amun-Ra flanked by neb sign, 1.4 cm long, dated New Kingdom, in the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, accession number 76.31.4295. Compare a related light green faience scarab inscribed with the names of Amun-Ra and Neit, 2.3 cm long, dated New Kingdom, Dynasty 19-20, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 09.180.953. A steatite scarab with the name of Amun-Ra, 1.6 cm long, dated New Kingdom, is in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 1894.1596.
