拍品描述

A JASPER AMULET OF BES, NEW KINGDOM, DYNASTY XVIII This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2012: “No. 729, Small Bes Egypt New Kingdom 18th dyn. red jasper, H,: 2.3 cm, OK 2007” Gallery price: EUR 980 or approx. EUR 1,400 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Egypt, 1550-1292 BC. Well carved, depicting the dwarf-protector deity Bes in a compact, frontal stance, with arms bent across the chest and legs slightly apart. The figure is rendered with neatly incised lines highlighting the characteristic facial features. Two small suspension holes pass through the upper body and arms, and the figure is drilled vertically as well. Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Dimensions: Height 2.2 cm (excl. stand), 3.6 cm (incl. stand) With an associated stand. (2) Bes was a unique and widely revered dwarf-protector deity in ancient Egyptian religion, particularly popular from the New Kingdom onward. He was primarily associated with protection: safeguarding households, children, and pregnant women from malevolent spirits and misfortune, and ensuring the success of childbirth and domestic well-being. Bes also played a role in entertainment and ritual, being invoked in music, dance, and festivals, often to dispel evil influences and promote joy. Fun Fact! The present lot bears an uncanny resemblance to a group of jade pendants in the form of humanoid figures from the Hongshan culture that existed from about 4700 to 2900 BC in northeast China. See, for example, a yellow jade figure of similar size (4 cm) at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 5 June 2020, lot 373; and another pendant (4.5 cm) at Sotheby’s Paris, 10 June 2021, lot 77. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related jasper amulet of Bes, dated New Kingdom, 2.5 cm high, in the Museo Egizio, Turin, inventory number Cat. 622. Compare a closely related jasper amulet of Bes, dated New Kingdom, 2.6 cm high, in the Louvre Paris, inventory number E 4988.
