A FINE EGYPTIAN INDURATED LIMESTONE ‘HORUS FALCON’ AMULET, LATE PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2012: “No. 618, Horus with pschent Egypt Late Period white limestone, H.: 4.8 cm, PS 2011” Gallery price: EUR 950 or approx. EUR 1,300 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Egypt, 664-332 BC. Of flattened form, finely carved as the god Horus in the form of a falcon atop a perch with his wings swept back, the head surmounted by the royal double crown of Egypt. The stone of a creamy ivory-white tone. The falcon is shown with this crown because Horus and kingship were closely linked from the earliest periods of Egyptian history. One of the oldest and most important deities of ancient Egypt, Horus was worshiped in several distinct forms: as a falcon he was a sky god closely associated with divine kingship and solar power, while as Horus the Child he was venerated as the son of Isis and Osiris. As a protector of kingship and an embodiment of royal authority, Horus was prominently represented in temple sculpture, most famously at the Ptolemaic Temple of Horus at Edfu in Upper Egypt. See also the earlier and larger limestone Horus falcon, dated New Kingdom, mid-18th Dynasty, reign of Amenhotep II, ca. 1427-1401 BC, found in three pieces in the upper layer of accumulated rubble west of the tomb of King Djer of the 1st Dynasty in 1895-1896.
