A WOOD FIGURE OF A MUMMIFIED FALCON, LATE PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 103, BR 2003, Egypt. Wood falcon Late P.” Gallery price: EUR 550 or approx. EUR 900 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Egypt, 664-332 BC. Well carved, the elongated bird stands atop an integral base, its wings tucked to its body terminating in the small tail. The head is shown with a short, curved beak. In this context the falcon is most closely identified with Sokar, the ancient Memphite god of the necropolis and rebirth, who was frequently represented in the form of a mummified falcon or as part of the composite deity Ptah-Sokar-Osiris. Figures like the present lot were commonly mounted atop Ptah-Sokar-Osiris statuettes or funerary shrines, where they embodied the regenerative powers of the underworld and the promise of resurrection.
