A PAIR OF EGYPTIAN BRONZE OSTRICH PLUMES, LATE PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Egypt, 664-332 BC. From the atef crown of a large figure of Osiris, each feather resting on a ram’s horn, the details carefully engraved. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite and cuprite encrustations. (3) These bronze plumes once came from an Atef-crown worn by the god of the underworld, Osiris. The element is composed of a horizontal corkscrew horn to the side of a plume. Recessed areas on the cobra’s body were once filled with colored paste. Two tenons on the right side of the plume once fit into the central miter of the crown. Similar large plumes were found along with small bronze figurines of Osiris at the temple of Amun at ancient Hibis in the Kharga Oasis. The large bronze these fragments originally belonged to would have been around 55-60 cm high, based on the proportions of a bronze statuette of Osiris in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 61.45.
