KOMAZAWA RISAI: A WOOD ENSHU ANDON, LANTERN, LATE MEIJI-TAISHO This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Japan, circa 1900. Of tall cylindrical form, the paper shade enclosed within a revolving bamboo frame that opens to provide access to the candle holder or oil lamp. Fitted with an arched carrying handle at the top and raised on slender bamboo supports above a flat circular wood base, the framework polished to a warm brown tone. Inscriptions: The tomobako inscribed by the artist, 竹行燈、指物師　利斎 ‘Take Andon, sahsimono-shi, Risai’ [Bamboo lantern, traditional wood crafting master Risai]. (2) Komazawa Risai is the professional name inherited by generations of master carpenters serving the san-Senke, the three principal schools of the Japanese tea ceremony. The workshop produces tea furnishings such as shelves, incense containers, and hearth frames. Following the death of the 14th-generation head in 1977, the title remained vacant for many years. Yoshida Hirozo, a relative of the former master, is currently training to succeed to the name. Andon lanterns came into widespread use from the Edo through the Meiji period. Rectangular, square, cylindrical, or circular in form, they were typically made with simple angular frames and bold lines, the dark structure contrasting with illuminated paper surrounding a small oil dish and wick. Admired for their restrained elegance and portability, they provided just enough light to function at night without disturbing the atmosphere. The three principal forms are the Enshu or Maru-Andon, with a cylindrical frame; the Ariake-Andon, or “Daybreak Lantern”; and the Kaku-Andon, a raised square lantern.
