A ROIRO-LACQUERED WOOD ARIAKE ANDON, DAYBREAK LANTERN, 19TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 347, TT 1984, Japanese Geisha Andon w. night box cover Edo” Gallery price: EUR 750 or approx. EUR 1,300 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Japan, late Edo period (1615-1868). Of cubic form with paper panels, the removable roiro-lacquered cover with crescent-moon-form and bird-form apertures to mute the light when desired, all raised on a square lacquered wood base with lobed cutouts to the front. The removable cover opens to reveal the interior and may also be used as a pedestal for the lantern, while its removal allows for greater illumination. The striking contrast between the white paper and the red or black lacquer lends the piece a distinctly modernist appearance. Known as an ariake-andon, or “daybreak lantern,” this type of nightlight was intended to remain lit throughout the night. The interior with later electrification (not tested). Rectangular, square, cylindrical, or circular in form, they were typically made with simple angular frames and bold lines, the dark structure contrasting with illuminated paper surrounding a small oil dish and wick. Admired for their restrained elegance and portability, they provided just enough light to function at night without disturbing the atmosphere. The three principal forms are the Enshu or Maru-Andon, with a cylindrical frame; the Ariake-Andon, or “Daybreak Lantern”; and the Kaku-Andon, a raised square lantern.
