A LARGE BRONZE TEMPLE LANTERN, TORO, 19TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Japan, Edo period (1615-1868). The tall lantern supported on a stepped circular base and baluster-form column, rising to a hexagonal light chamber with openwork panels finely pierced with scrolling karakusa vines, one hinged panel opening to reveal the vestibule inside. The broad domed roof with pierced cloud-form apertures and upturned eaves issuing dragon-head brackets suspending small bells, surmounted by a lotus-form cup and flaming jewel finial. The bronze and copper-alloy surface with a warm reddish-brown patina.
