A BRONZE TEMPLE HANGING LANTERN WITH THE KUYO MON, TSURI-DORO, EDO PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Japan, 1615-1868. Finely cast and engraved, the lantern raised on six leaf-form supports incised with foliage and surmounted by a pierced domed cover formed by twelve lotus petals below a wish-granting jewel final and hanging ring, the six-sided candle box with a reticulated lobed-pattern applied to the center with the Kuyu mon crest. They are usually made of bronze, copper, iron, or wood and are suspended from the eaves of roofs. Historically, Tsuri Doro lanterns were first used in imperial palaces and later became popular in Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. They served both practical and symbolic purposes. While they provided light during the night, they also represented guidance, wisdom, and spiritual illumination. Many famous Japanese shrines display rows of these lanterns, creating a beautiful sight during festivals and ceremonies.
