A PAIR OF SIX-PANEL ‘PINE TREES’ FOLDING SCREENS, BYOBU, BY SUZUKI SHONEN (1849-1918) This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 411, KA 2005, Japanese pair of Byobu 6 panel paintings of pine trees in tusch on gold leaf Meiji” Gallery price: EUR 7,400 or approx. EUR 12,400 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Japan. Ink on gold-leafed paper. Mounted on six red-lacquered wood panels with gilt-metal fittings. Finely executed with bold brushstrokes to depict large pines with extended branches and thick needles. (2) Inscriptions: Signed ‘Shonen hitsu’ [Painted by Shonen] with seal ‘Shonen no in’ [The seal of Shonen]. Suzuki Shonen (1849-1918) was the son of Hyakunen, who founded a major painting studio in Kyoto in the late Edo period. Shonen inherited both the studio and his father’s impressive reputation. One of Kyoto’s most influential artists, Shonen became a professor at the Kyoto Prefecture Painting School in 1881.
