A PAIR OF SMALL SIX-PANEL ‘CRANES AND PINE’ FOLDING SCREENS, BYOBU, LATE EDO-MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 418, Grays Portobello 1987, Pair of Hina [pine] 6 panel Byobu, Meiji” Gallery price: EUR 480 or approx. EUR 800 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Japan. Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold foil on paper. Each mounted on six roiro-lacquered wood panels with metal fittings. Finely painted with a group of red-capped cranes (tanchozuru) before gnarled, luxuriant pine trees, while others soar above the vibrant green grassland. The red-crowned, or Japanese, crane depicted in this painting is said to live for 1,000 years. Pine is an auspicious symbol in Japan, representing longevity due to its long life, and endurance as it remains green throughout the winter months. The pine trees depicted in this painting introduce a freshness and liveliness which complements the spirited movements of the cranes.
