A RARE TWO-PANEL ‘PINE AND IRIS’ FOLDING SCREEN, BYOBU, MEIJI PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 413, TT 1988, Japanese Byobu 2 panel painting of pine tree on silver Meiji” Gallery price: EUR 1,750 or approx. EUR 3,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Japan, 1868-1912. Ink, watercolors, gouache, and silver paint on paper. Mounted on silk brocade on two roiro-lacquered wood panels with metal fittings. Finely painted to depict an old, gnarled pine with verdant branches by a meandering stream dotted with irises and bamboo grass. The pine is an auspicious symbol in Japan, representing longevity due to its long life, and endurance as it remains green throughout the winter months.
