拍品描述

A TWO-PANEL ‘TIGER IN A BAMBOO GROVE’ FOLDING SCREEN, BYOBU, BY SANGENSAI, EDO PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Japan, 1615-1868. Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold foil on paper. Mounted on two roiro-lacquered wood panels with metal fittings. Finely painted to depict a tiger in a bamboo grove, next to a stream trickling down craggy rocks. The feline with a powerful expression, ears raised, and fur intricately detailed. Inscriptions: Signed with two seals, 山妍斎 ‘Sangensai’ and 居山之印 ‘Kyozan no in’ [The seal of Kyozan (Kozan)]. Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Dimensions: Size 168 x 174 cm This motif is called take no tora, “tiger in bamboo”. There are many different interpretations; the tiger has a strong nature, is flexible and resilient like the bamboo, but it is also said that the strong tiger is looking for shelter underneath the bamboo, as any earthly power is inferior to the forces of nature. Moreover, the tiger and bamboo represent the power of faith in Buddhism. Literature comparison: Compare a related Kano School two-panel folding screen depicting two tigers, dated to the 17th century, size 171 x 172 cm, in the Victoria and Albert Museum of Art, accession number E.3591-1910. Compare a related pair of six-panel byobu depicting a dragon and tiger, by Soga Chokuan, Azuchi-Momoyama–Edo period, dated to the 17th century, in the Tokyo National Museum, collection number A-125.
