A GROUP OF TWO MUSHA-NINGYO ‘SAMURAI AND BANNERMAN’ DOLLS, EDO-MEIJI This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 367, TT 1986, Set of Japanese Boys day Samurai doll Edo 1830-1850, Retainer and Shogun Hideyoshi” Gallery price: EUR 4,500 or approx. EUR 7,500 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Japan, 19th century. Each figure features a carved wood head covered in gofun and is dressed in elaborate multi-layered garments. The samurai wears gold, gray, and earthy toned brocade robes over a gold-lacquered armor with copper highlights, laced in red, holding a tachi, bow, and saihai. The finely painted face bears a stern, lifelike expressions with furrowed brows and downturned mouths, all beneath a finely worked kabuto. The accompanying kneeling retainer is dressed in blue and orange brocade robe under a sabiji-nuri lacquered armor, laced in green, with the right hand raising the Rising Sun flag, and a quiver with bows to the back. The head is delicately painted with expressive features, displaying a forlorn expression with furrowed brows and a downturned mouth, all topped by the jingasa above. The development of the Boy’s Day Ceremony, with its dramatic display of exquisitely dressed ningyo, not only reflects the proud family lineages and exploits, but the ritual also imbued the figures with a special symbolism that enabled participants to renew their connection with the spirit of the samurai.
