A GROUP OF TWO MUSHA-NINGYO ‘MINAMOTO NO YOSHITSUNE AND RETAINER’ DOLLS, EDO-MEIJI This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 368, TT 1986, Set of Japanese Boy's Day Samurai dolls Edo 1830-1850, Retainer and Shogun Hideyoshi” Gallery price: EUR 4,500 or approx. EUR 7,500 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Japan, 19th century. Each figure features a carved wood head covered in gofun and is dressed in elaborate multi-layered garments. Minamoto no Yoshitsune wears gold, blue, and earthy tones, over silvered plates with gilt-metal highlights, decorated with a dragon medallion to the center, laced in light blue, holding an ochiwa battle fan, tachi, and osuriagi. The finely painted face bears a stern, lifelike expressions with furrowed brows and downturned mouth, beneath an elaborate kabuto. The accompanying kneeling retainer is dressed in blue-and-gold checkered brocade over rust-orange lacquered armor, laced in green, raising a flag adorned with the Daki Myoga (ginger leaves) kamon. The head is delicately painted with expressive features, including cheerful eyes, vibrant lips, and raised brows, topped by a jingasa. The development of the Boy’s Day Ceremony, with its dramatic display of exquisitely dressed ningyo, not only reflects the proud family lineages and exploits, but the ritual also imbued the figures with a special symbolism that enabled participants to renew their connection with the spirit of the samurai.
