A GROUP OF TWO MUSHA-NINGYO ‘SAMURAI AND RETAINER’ DOLLS, EDO-MEIJI This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 369, PF 1998, Set of Japanese Boy's Day Samurai dolls Meiji 1878-1912” Gallery price: EUR 2,400 or approx. EUR 4,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Japan, 19th century. Each figure features a carved wood head covered in gofun and is dressed in elaborate multi-layered garments. The samurai wears purple and beige brocaded robes over silver-lacquered armor with gilt highlights, laced in red, holding a folding battle fan, tachi, and osuriagi. The finely painted face bears a stern, lifelike expression beneath an elaborate kabuto. The accompanying kneeling retainer is dressed in purple and gold brocade over gilt and black-lacquered armor, laced in gold, with a sash securing a sword and a bow to the back, and the right hand clutching a tasseled staff. The head is delicately painted with expressive features, including a short moustache and broad smile. The development of the Boy’s Day Ceremony, with its dramatic display of exquisitely dressed ningyo, not only reflects the proud family lineages and exploits, but the ritual also imbued the figures with a special symbolism that enabled participants to renew their connection with the spirit of the samurai.
