EUR 2,800 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Japan, 1868-1912. Constructed in the same manner as a full-sized armor with gilt-lacquered components laced in red, mounted on a gold and purple silk brocade, and fitted with intricate kanamono with sakura (cherry-blossom) and kiku (chrysanthemum) design. The armor comprises: Kabuto (Helmet): A roiro-lacquered fourteen-plate sujibachi kabuto with a five-tiered chrysanthemum-form tehen kanamono, the mabizashi and fukigaeshi each with printed leather, centered by the gilt-metal maedate in the form of a full moon above clouds and flanked by the kuwagata pierced with inome design to the top, all above the three-lame jikoro. Menpo (Mask): A lacquered menpo cast with flared nostrils and an open mouth and designed with deeply embossed wrinkles, all fitted with a two-lame yodarekake. Do (Chest Plate): A lacquered-gilt do decorated with painted scrolls in silver and red, with six sections of four-lame kusazuri. Sode (Shoulder Guard): A pair of five-lame sode fitted with sakura-form crest-appliqués to the top. Haidate (Thigh Guard): A pair of gilt-iron and kusari (chain mail) haidate. Suneate (Shin Guards): A pair of roiro and gilt-lacquered suneate. Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Dimensions: Height 91 cm (incl. storage box) With a wood storage box (yoroibako). During the 17th century, samurai families used to display a set of helmet and armor, weapons and banners outdoors on the Tango-no-Sekku Festival (The Boy’s Festival), held on the fifth day of the fifth month, designated as an important ceremonial day by the Edo Shogunate Government. Later in the Edo period, these items, except for the banners, were moved indoors and displayed in rooms facing the street. The armors gradually became miniaturized, thus keeping splendid decorations, as such armors and helmets were also to display the prosperity of their household.
