A LACQUERED IRON MENPO, EDO PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Japan, 1615-1868. Skillfully forged in one section with a removable nose plate secured by turning pins, with flared nostrils and an open mouth, below the applied horsehair mustache and above a long wispy goatee, designed with deeply embossed wrinkles, the chin applied with two otayori no kugi flanking the ase-nagashi, all fitted with a three-lame brown-lacquered yodarekake with beige lacing. The interior is lacquered vermilion. For samurai, masks served as a principal face defense and helped secure the helmet to the head more firmly. The majority of masks were half-length (mempo), covering the nose and the face below the eyes. Their iron surfaces are either lacquered or a dark russet finish; the interiors are usually lacquered red.
