A PALE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE ‘DRAGON AND PHOENIX’ PENDANT, WESTERN HAN DYNASTY China, 206 BC-9 AD. Finely carved, the dragon coiling upon itself, its sinuous contour embellished with scrolling motifs and its surface delicately incised with further scrollwork. Its stylized head depicted with slightly raised eyes, a flattened snout with a gaping mouth revealing sharp fangs, and a pair of curled ears. The tail terminating in the expressive miniature portrayal of a phoenix. The finely polished, translucent stone of an appealing pale celadon tone, with extensive russet inclusions and veining, as well as dark mottling and opaque areas of creamy-white mineral accretions.
