† A YELLOWISH GREEN JADE ‘DRAGON AND PHOENIX’ PENDANT, WARRING STATES China, c. 475-221 BC. The flat plaque is finely carved as a dragon with a long, sinuous S-shaped body embellished with curled and truncated appendages. One end terminates in a dragon head with circular eyes and a broad muzzle, the body intricately interlinked with three phoenixes whose crested heads and hooked beaks extend in opposing directions. The surfaces are decorated throughout with raised comma spirals. The translucent jade is of a pale yellowish-green color, with extensive calcification and russet-brown alteration concentrated across the lower half. Dimensions: Length 8.7 cm Literature comparison: Compare a dragon-shaped jade pendant from the Myers collection with a similar design and also dated to the Eastern Zhou period, published in Filippo Salviati, Radiant Stones: Archaic Chinese Jades, 2004, Honkong, no. 97. Compare also with a similar jade excavated in 1977 in Anhui province and published in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji, volume 9, no.126 p. 66.
