A FINE GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF NYOIRIN KANNON (AVALOKITESHVARA), EDO PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Japan, 1615-1868. Of yosegi (joined) construction and finely carved seated in royal ease, the primary left hand holds a wish-granting jewel, while the right is held closer to the chest. Two secondary arms are raised to the back, and a fifth rests on his cheek while the sixth is flat on the ground, bracing him against the earth. The wish-fulfilling form of the deity Kannon is dressed in monastic robes draped over the left shoulder, and a loose-fitting dhoti with richly carved folds, the serene face with downcast eyes inlaid with inside-painted crystal, elegantly arched brows centered by a crystal-inlaid byakugo (urna), and bow-shaped lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by pendulous lobes, the neatly incised hair pulled up into a high chignon. The Buddha sits atop a gilt-lacquered lotus throne composed of a double-lotus base, raised on an elaborate balustraded hexagonal stand with open worked panels and rich cloud and turbulent wave decoration, and is backed by an intricately carved cloud-form kogai with foliate halo. In Japanese Buddhism, Nyoirin Kannon is one of the six transformed manifestations (rokuson) of Kannon, associated with the granting of prayers and the compassionate response to the needs of the world. The word nyo-i refers to the cintamani, the wish-granting jewel; the term rin, which means “wheel,” refers to the turning of the wheel of the law. The Nyoirin Kannon was widely worshiped by those who hoped to gain riches and see their requests fulfilled.
