Thickly potted with shallow rounded sides supported on a foot ring and rising to a straight rim, covered overall with a sky-blue glaze with appealing craquelure, thinning to a distinct mushroom tone at the rim, and ending irregularly above the foot. One of the Five Classic Wares of the Song dynasty, Jun ceramics have long been admired for the depth and brilliance of their glazes. Scientific analysis has shown that the blue tone is not produced by pigment but by an optical effect: during firing, the glaze forms light-scattering glass droplets that reflect the blue spectrum. Its intensity depends largely on the substantial thickness of the single glaze layer.
