A THANGKA OF SHADAKSHARI LOKESHVARA, 19TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Tibet. Gold, distemper and watercolors on cloth. The four-armed deity is seated in dhyanasana atop a lotus throne rising from a pool of water with offerings below, flanked by Manjushri and Vajrapani, a green and white tara, and centered by Amitabha above. His principal hands held in anjali mudra, the secondary hands raised and one holding a blossom, dressed in a flowing dhoti and billowing scarves, richly adorned with fine jewelry, framed by a foliate mandorla and halo. The four-armed (chaturbhuja) emanation of Avalokiteshvara is regarded as the patron deity of Tibet and believed to be incarnate in the succession of Dalai Lamas. The popular Tibetan mantra om mani padme hum, ‘praise to the jewel in the lotus’, invokes the compassion of the bodhisattva Shadakshari Avalokiteshvara.
