AN ‘ASTROLOGY’ SUTRA SCROLL, 19TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Tibet. Ink and watercolors on paper, with partial fabric mounting. Painted to the top with Shadakshari Avalokiteshvara flanked by Vajrapani and Manjushri, further containing the Kalachakra, the eight Buddhist emblems, and the twelve Tibetan zodiac signs: rat, ox, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig, with inscriptions likely used for divination regarding health and stellar constellations. Bearing repeated impressions of a large Tibetan monastic seal in ornamental ’Phags-pa-derived script to front and reverse. Drawing on Indian and Chinese traditions as well as the teachings of the Kalachakra Tantra, highly trained astrologers—often lamas or learned lay practitioners—were consulted to determine auspicious dates, prepare calendars, and compile individual astrological charts.
