A GILT BRONZE REPOUSSÉ HEAD OF A SNOW LION, 16TH-17TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Tibet. The fragmentary beast head with a fierce expression, piercing eyes below flaming brows, the mouth revealing a set of sharp fangs and curled tongue, below a ruyi shaped snout, framed by a curled mane, and accentuated in gilt. Traditionally placed above temple entrances or upon altars inserted within the Torana, the arch of glory which surrounds the divinity, it serves as a vigilant guardian and protector and is often shown with its jaws parted, as if emitting a menacing growl, to ward off evil spirits.
