AN ENAMEL ON COPPER ‘PHOENIX’ SNUFF BOTTLE, POSSIBLY IMPERIAL, PALACE WORKSHOPS, GUANGZHOU, 1720-1750 China. The elongated ovoid bottle with a spreading neck, thin lip, raised oval foot, painted in enamels on a pale blue ground featuring two sinuous phoenixes rendered with colorful plumage and holding blossoms in their beak, and framed by black and gilt foliate scrollwork. Dimensions: Height including stopper 77 mm. Diameter neck 11 mm and mouth 7 mm. The bottle's elongated shape is typical of those produced by the Guangzhou workshops during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods and unknown among bottles enameled in the Imperial workshops in Beijing dating from the Kangxi to the second half of the Qianlong period.
