AN INSIDE-PAINTED BLUE GLASS ‘FIGURAL SCENES’ SNUFF BOTTLE, BY MENG ZISHOU, DATED 1909 China, Beijing. Of flattened ovoid form, supported on a short oval foot and rising to a cylindrical neck with a flat lip, the transparent blue glass bottle finely painted to the interior with two continuous figural scenes in a misty riverside landscape. One side depicts an elegant lady seated in a carriage beneath pine trees, accompanied by attendants, one holding a standard, the reverse showing a warrior with his horse gathered by a gnarled tree in a tranquil lakeside setting. Inscriptions: To the bottle, 富貴壽考, 己酉仲夏寫於京師, 孟子受作, ‘Wealth, honor, and longevity. Painted in midsummer of the Jiyou year (1909) in the capital (Beijing), by Meng Zishou.’ Stopper: Copper modeled with bats and lingzhi and topped by a coral finial Dimensions: Height including stopper 81 mm. Diameter neck 16 mm and mouth 8 mm. Meng Zishou was active between 1904-1911 and was an artist of the Beijing School. He is well-known for producing life-like portraits.
