A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, CHIENG SEN STYLE, RATANAKOSIN PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 282, FH 1990, Thai Rama 5th c. bronze Buddha 19th c.” Gallery price: EUR 1,350 or approx. EUR 2,200 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Thailand. Seated in virasana, the right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra, the left held in dhyana mudra above his lap, dressed in diaphanous uttarasanga which covers the left shoulder and crosses the chest diagonally, but leaves the right shoulder and right arm bare. The serene face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes inlaid in mother-of-pearl with black lacquer pupils, arched brows, and full lips forming a benevolent smile, flanked by elongated earlobes, the hair arranged in small snail-shell curls over the gently domed ushnisha surmounted by a flaming ketumala. This stylistic tradition combines elements of both the Sukhothai and Lan Na schools, two of the principal sculptural traditions of Thailand.
