AN INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS ‘QUAILS’ SNUFF BOTTLE, BY YAN YUTIAN, DATED 1895 China. The rounded rectangular body supported on an oval splayed foot with a recessed base and rising to a sloped shoulder surmounted by a gently flared neck. The interior skillfully painted to depict two figures seated in a pavilion looking out over a waterfall gushing into a river, the reverse with a pair of quails sitting on a rock beneath pine. Inscriptions: To the bottle, 乙未京師閆玉田作, ‘Composed by Yan Yutian in the capital, in the year of Yiwei’. Stopper: Jade on onyx collar Dimensions: Height 74 mm. Diameter neck 15 mm and mouth 6 mm. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related inside painted glass snuff bottle with landscape by Yan Yutian, dated 1895, 6.6 cm tall, illustrated in Hugh M.
