AN EARLY INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS ‘LANDSCAPE’ SNUFF BOTTLE, BY YE ZHONGSAN, DATED 1894 China, Beijing. The rounded rectangular body supported on an oval splayed foot with a recessed base and rising to a sloped shoulder surmounted by a gently flared neck. The interior skillfully painted, depicting a continuous scene of a tall mountain framing a river with meandering boats and figures deep in discussion within a pavilion. Inscriptions: To the bottle, 甲午臘月寫, 應仲琳二兄大人清玩, 作於都門, 葉仲三, ‘Written in the twelfth lunar month of the Jiawu year (1894), for the refined appreciation of my esteemed elder brother Zhonglin, composed at the capital (Beijing), Ye Zhongsan.’ Stopper: Coral Dimensions: Height including stopper 68 mm. Diameter neck 16 mm and mouth 6 mm. Ye Zhongsan (1875–1945) is regarded as one of the top four artists of the Beijing School of Snuff Bottle Painting. His students, Wang Xisan and Liu Shouben, as well as his granddaughter, Ye Shuying, are also renowned artists in snuff bottle painting.
