A FINELY ENAMELED YIXING WARE ‘LANDSCAPE’ SNUFF BOTTLE, 1821-1880 China. The bottle of hexagonal form, surmounted by a cylindrical neck with flat lip, painted around the dark brown body with polychrome enamels, featuring a landscape with pavilions nestled between rockwork and pine trees. The circular, recessed base is covered in white enamels. Stopper: Agate cabochon on a turquoise platelet, carved spoon Dimensions: Height including stopper 63 mm. Diameter neck 15 mm and mouth 6 mm. Yixing snuff bottles are often left plain but examples exist with decoration painted in slip, carved or enameled. The enameled versions derive their subject matter from the rivers, lakes and mountains of the Jiangnan (South of the River) area around Yixing that inspired the works of so many literati living there. The faceted form of the present bottle was no doubt influenced by contemporary faceted vessels that were being produced at the Palace workshops.
