AN IMPERIAL FAMILLE ROSE ‘PEONY POEM’ SNUFF BOTTLE, QIANLONG MARK AND PERIOD China, 1735-1796. Of rectangular form with rounded corners, decorated in vivid enamels, gilt, and iron-red, the narrow sides decorated with lotus vines on dense scrollwork ground, one side featuring a lobed reserve with peonies, magnolias, and aster issuing from rockwork, the reverse inscribed with a poem from the Qianlong emperor and two seal marks ‘Qian’ and ‘Long’. The underside with a four-character Qianlong nianzhi mark in iron-red and of the period. Inscriptions: To one side, ‘Lush reds and brilliant purples linger after spring has passed, The finest of Yangzhou's blooms, unmatched in hue and kind. Exhausting all their charm, yet still they bear a hidden regret - Forced by others to be called mere 'flower slaves' (or 'flower servants').’ With two seal marks ‘Qian’ and ‘Long’. This poem by Emperor Qianlong titled ‘Peony (Shaoyao)’ is preserved in the Complete Edition of the Leshan Tang Collection (Leshan Tang Quanji Dingben), a collection of poetry and prose written by the Qing Emperor Qianlong before his accession to the throne. The contents reflect the emperor’s youthful thought, scholarly cultivation, and political views, and the work was later incorporated into the Siku Quanshu (Complete Library of the Four Treasuries).
