A SANDSTONE TORSO OF A MALE, AYUTTHAYA KINGDOM This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 155, FH 1988, Thai Ayutthaya stone torso 15th c.” Gallery price: EUR 1,800 or approx. EUR 3,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Thailand, 15th-16th century. Finely carved with broad shoulders, a gently modelled chest, and a softly tapering waist, conveying a balanced and restrained physique. The lower torso is wrapped in a close-fitting sampot, indicated by the subtly incised folds and sash-like detailing. The fragment may have formed part of an image of the Buddha or a Buddhist monk. The sandstone has acquired an attractive natural beige-grey tone. (2) Buddhist images of the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods were predominantly executed in bronze or stucco, while surviving examples carved in stone are comparatively rare. The present torso belonged to a larger image of the Buddha or a Buddhist monk and may originally have formed part of a sculpture assembled from separately carved sections. Such figures were frequently finished with an overall coating of lacquer and, in more exceptional cases, gilding.
