A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, NORTHERN SUKOTHAI STYLE, 16TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 271, FH 1986, Thai, North East type bronze Buddha 16th c. [on a 19th c. stand]” Gallery price: EUR 1,350 or approx. EUR 2,300 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Northern Thailand. Finely cast, seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base raised on twelve feet atop a stepped pedestal. The buddha holds his right hand in bhumisparshamudra, his left resting on his lap, dressed in an uttarasanga which covers the left shoulder and crosses the chest diagonally, culminating in a fishtail pleat. The face with an introspective expression, with pouting lips, heavy-lidded eyes inlaid in mother-of-pearl beneath neatly incised eyebrows, an aquiline nose, flanked by elongated earlobes, the hair arranged in pointed curls over the gently domed ushnisha and topped by a flaming ketumala. (2) Ceasing to represent the Buddha in a Khmer manner, the emergent Thai kingdoms of Sukhothai and the more northern Lan Na developed their own emblematically Thai Buddha images in the 13th century. The classic features each adopted were subsequently comingled in various ways, particularly in workshops located between the two capitals, giving rise to a broadly classified Northern Sukhothai style.
