A RUBY-RED OVERLAY WHITE GLASS ‘LONGEVITY’ SNUFF BOTTLE, 1770-1850 China. The flattened ovoid body supported on an oval foot and rising to a cylindrical neck, finely carved through the ruby-red layer to the translucent milky-white ground to depict a deer grasping a lingzhi fungus in his mouth and raising its head toward a towering pine tree, the reverse with bamboo and prunus, all above rockwork encircling the foot. The pine, bamboo, and prunus form the ‘Three Friends of Winter’, since these three plants do not wither during the cold season. As such, they symbolize steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. The deer and lingzhi are further emblems of longevity. Stopper: Coral with bronze collar Dimensions: Height including stopper 74 mm. Diameter neck 14 mm and mouth 8 mm.
