A GROUP LOT WITH EIGHT BUDDHA’S ENLIGHTENMENT FLAMES, 16TH-17TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 296, FH 1991, Thai Ayutthaya gilded bronze flame of Buddha 17th c.” Gallery price: EUR 540 or approx. EUR 900 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. “No. 297, FH 1991, 4 pcs. of Thai bronze flames: left to right: Lan Na 16th c.; Ayutthaya 15th c.; Sukhothai 15th c., Sukhothai 14th c.” Gallery prices: EUR 3,710 (total) or approx. EUR 6,200 (total) adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. “No. 298, FH 1991, Burmese Shan bronze finial 17th c.” Gallery price: EUR 1,700 or approx. EUR 2,800 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Finely cast, the group comprises eight flame-shaped finials symbolizing the supreme enlightenment of the Buddha. One flame is from Shan States, Burma, while the other seven hail from the Ayutthaya Kingdom. (8) Ordered by size (largest to smallest): 1. Of faceted form, composed of overlapping abstracted flames and notable for its substantial weight; 2. Of pointed conical form, composed of multiple segmented abstract flame forms; 3. Of rigid structure, forming a serrated profile defined by flame-like points, rising to a pronounced apex from a large lotus blossom; 4. Of elongated, four-faceted pyramidal form, with opposing edges partially overlaid by flames, and a swirling core rising from a subtle lotus blossom; 5. Of elongated conical form, composed of flowing flames with a swirling core, with extensive remnants of gilding; 6. Of undulating, slightly flattened form, with a swirling flame core, and rising from a lotus blossom, retaining traces of gilt decoration; 7. Of broad, flowing volume, formed by undulating flames with a swirling central core, rising from a subtle lotus blossom; 8. Composed of ascending flames with a distinctive serrated outline, culminating in a sharp point.
