A RARE GILT SANDSTONE BUDDHA’S ENLIGHTENMENT FLAME, SIRASPATA, AYUTTHAYA KINGDOM This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 295, FH 1991, Thai Ayutthaya gilded stone flame of Buddha 15th-16th c.” Gallery price: EUR 760 or approx. EUR 1,300 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Thailand, 15th- 16th century. Boldly carved, the domed ushnisha covered with concentric rows of tightly rendered curls and surmounted by a prominent lotus bud-shaped flaming finial. Coated with lacquer gilding of later date. Introduced through Sri Lankan Buddhist influence, this luminous crest became a defining feature of Thai bronze sculpture, appearing in distinctive variations throughout the Sukhothai, Lan Na, and Ayutthaya traditions. Buddhist images from the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods were typically executed in bronze or stucco, while examples carved in stone are exceedingly rare. Stone sculptures of this type were often constructed from separately carved sections; in the present example, the ushnisha and flaming finial were fashioned as an independent element and subsequently attached to the head. The various components were joined with a natural resinous adhesive and were most likely originally finished with an overall coating of lacquer or, in more exceptional cases, gilding.
