A VERY RARE BRONZE BUDDHA’S ENLIGHTENMENT FLAME, SIRASPATA, LAN NA KINGDOM This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2012: “No. 580, FH 1986, Thai Lan Na bronze flame 15th c., 16.5 cm h.” Gallery price: EUR 880 or approx. EUR 1,200 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Northern Thailand, 15th century. Boldly cast, of four-faceted pyramidal form, with a rounded bottom emerging from a lotus blossom. Two opposing sides shaped as overlapping lotus petals, while the remaining two reveal a swirling core of incised flames across the surface. (2) The flame-shaped siraspata rising above the ushnisha is the sculptural expression of the ketumala, the supernatural radiance emitted by the Buddha at enlightenment. Introduced through Sri Lankan Buddhist influence, this luminous crest became a defining feature of Thai bronze sculpture, appearing in distinctive variations throughout the Sukhothai, Lan Na, and Ayutthaya traditions.
